Feedback vs. Feedforward

What is the difference between feedback and feedforward?

Feedback is reactive in the manner that it responds to past events or outputs, while feedforward is proactive preparing the receiver for opportunities and solutions, not weak points.

Feedback: "Mary, in yesterday's meeting you paid little attention to the marketing manager's presentation. This can harm you, as you miss important details of our results and still run the risk of appearing inattentive to the team."

Feedforward: "Mary, in the next meetings, you can learn more details about our results and generate a perception of interest in the team if you stay 100% focused on the marketing manager's presentation. A simple tip is to turn off your cell phone during the meeting."

Reflecting on our class learning communities I would say that myself as well as other classmates have done a phenomenal job with offering feedforward, rather than feedback. We often gave each other more suggestions, but not excusing grammatical feedback as well. The feedforward approach reminds me of the popular saying, "It's not what you say, it's how you say it." Although I think constructive feedback can be necessary, however, I am in awe of the feedforward approach and the positive outcome it constitutes. I would say that feedforward has a direct correlation with the growth mindset. While we are offering feedforward we are also building the receiver for preparation of a growth mindset to make improvements reaching your highest potential and product output. Overall, it allows you to give suggestions on ways a person can do something better without criticism or pointing out solely what is wrong. In my fourth grade classroom, I have been using the feedforward approach all school year without realizing that is what it was called until now. It motivates the kids to keep trying and stay engaged even when it's not completely right the first time. I am guiding them on where to move forward based on their misconceptions.
