Duarte Design's Five Rules for Presentations by Nancy Duarte
The story on my ePortfolio will be centered around the need for change in professional learning (PL) for educators. The current one-size-fits-all PL approach does not support the ongoing, personalized, and practical development needed to thrive in today's rapidly evolving educational environment with the incorporation of technology. The story behind the story is my belief that educators, being lifelong learners ourselves, deserve PL opportunities that mirror the personalized, flexible learning experiences we aim to give our students with active learning opportunities.
My presentation will reflect Freytag’s Pyramid, where the introduction presents the current challenges in professional learning (exposition), followed by an argument for change (rising action). Next, Alternative PL methods are introduced, offering solutions such as blended learning and on-going coaching/support and the benefits of alternative PL (climax). The five key principles of effective PL will then be discussed (falling action). The conclusion will be the call to action, urging my audience to adopt this new approach.
The shift from traditional PL to the alternative PL approach will occur by highlighting the limitations and lack of effectiveness of the current PL model by utilizing research that backs up why we should take the alternative PL model. I will target the minds and the hearts of my audience by showing that this change will not only benefit the teachers but also lead to better outcomes for their students. Objections, such as concerns about time, support during implementation, or skepticism about the effectiveness of the alternative PL, are addressed by mentioning ongoing support, real-time feedback, and practical application of what is learned.
I do believe that I have an effective call to action. I will have the audience reflect on the benefits of the new PL approach and consider how they can take steps to implement these changes. It encourages collaboration and invites feedback, emphasizing that the shift can only happen if they take part in it. It will encourage collaboration and feedback, emphasizing that the shift can only happen if they take part in it. They will also be given a feedback form link via email that they can access to give feedback on the current PL model and it will offer an opportunity to include input on things they would like to see happen in the alternative PL model.
