Today’s society is living in a world where we are constantly surrounded by technology. We have entered a digital age and there is a small chance that we will ever go backward in the progression of technology. Since technology is progressing so quickly we have to find ways to innovate the education world to adapt to this digital era. Social networks have increasingly become popular as a means of communication and the transferring of information. Professionally, you have a network like LinkedIn where communication about jobs and professional careers is posted. Social networks such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok have become increasingly diverse in the amount of information that our adults and youth can grasp and learn new things from.
E-portfolios can be an essential way to highlight our knowledge, skills, professional developments, and achievements throughout our careers. As we apply for new positions and work towards elevation, we can present professional e-portfolios as a secondary resume. It not only showcases what we know but also the creativity and ownership used to piece the portfolio together. For students, they would create what is called an academic e-portfolio. An academic ePortfolio is a digital collection created by a student of their course-related work, like essays, posters, photographs, videos, and artwork; academic ePortfolios can also capture other aspects of a student’s life, such as volunteer experiences, employment history, extracurricular activities, and more (EPortfolios Explained: Theory and Practice, 2017). This not only mirrors a reflection tool for students but also an opportunity for them to engage in active discussions with each other based on things they incorporated in their e-portfolios gaining peer feedback.
Ultimately, e-portfolios have a variety of ways to be useful. It opens up a door for community and collaboration in learning while highlighting all of your acquired knowledge and skills. The more we spread the importance of e-portfolios to colleagues and students the more we help transform others and equip them with new tools to use in the twenty-first century.
