Reflection is a critical component of the learning process, allowing us to think deeply about our experiences, understandings, and actions. As I continue this journey in the ADL program, I can reflect on my engagement regarding the coursework resources, collaboration with peers, and the knowledge acquired to help shape and create an understanding. This reflection will detail my contribution to learning and my learning community regarding Creating Significant Learning Environments and Applying Educational Technology. After reviewing the self-assessment marking guide provided for the courses, I will assign myself a score for both ADL courses taken. This will be considered a true indicator of my self-awareness throughout each course.
My self-assessment scores are as follows below:
Applying Educational Technology (5303)- 90
Creating Significant Learning Environments (5313)- 95
My learning community embodied a supportive environment where we could collaborate, exchange ideas, and ultimately help each other succeed in our learning endeavors. My learning community for each course is listed below.
Applying Educational Technology (5303)- Kimberely, Maria, Regginee, Rose, Anna
Creating Significant Learning Environments (5313)- Kimberely, Maria, Regginee, Rose, Anna
Reflections on Learning and Contributions
Despite the many scheduling challenges I faced throughout the 8 weeks of these two courses, I was still able to meet all deadlines. In 5303, my biggest challenge was not being able to join the live Zoom calls due to coaching youth track, but I was able to attend all live sessions for 5313 and engage in the live discussions, breakout rooms, and ask clarifying questions to Dr. Grogan in regards to assignment expectations. I made sure to continuously check the announcements to be sure that I was organized and paced myself well with the given workload of the two courses.
I have continued to embrace the power of a growth mindset and have a greater appreciation for it as I continue my journey in this program. I have been able to receive feedback and utilize it in ways that will help me improve and get the most out of my learning experience and improve the quality of my work. I have made changes to my ePortfolio since the start of the ADL program. I am excited about my changes as it has given my ePortfolio more cohesiveness. I was able to adhere to sticking to one particular font for my heading and only utilizing one other font for the body paragraphs of each assignment. I also made a few changes to the background of my about me page in hopes that the font is more readable with the switch in text box filler color as Dr. Osborn suggested.
I collaborated with my peers through Microsoft Teams Channels for both courses making sure to ask questions and provide feedback as well. Through our collaboration groups, I feel that there were equal opportunities given for leadership roles. Whenever I was able to provide more insight and clarity on assignments I would. I also spoke with specific peers such as Regginee through text messaging to provide feedback on her assignments to determine if she was headed in the right direction. I also scheduled face-to-face meetings with my colleague Kimberely to allow for collaboration and building each other up to achieve success based on coursework expectations for both . I was also an active participant in discussion posts providing in-depth responses as well as responding to my peers promptly. I've enjoyed reviewing my peers' academic ePortfolios and collaborating with Kimberely on ways to improve my portfolio as well as collaborating with her on her Understanding by Design (UbD) framework assignment.
Taking two courses simultaneously in the ADL program has been beneficial as each course has significantly impacted my learning experiences. Often I can attribute the concepts and discussions of one class and apply it to the very next. In 5303, understanding the COVA framework, the Power of a Growth Mindset, and the importance of ePortfolios helped to transfer the knowledge and skills over to 5313 to allow me to dig deep and persevere through any of the challenges I may have faced during the completion of assignments. Creating Significant Learning Environments and reflecting on “A New Culture of Learning” was able to help drive the beginning phases of how creating my significant learning environment could impact my innovation plan. This then led to a greater connection between Fink’s 3 Column Table and Wiggins UbD template to help execute learning goals, activities, and assessment pieces. I've also enjoyed making comparisons on the topics of "Connecting the dots vs. Collecting the Dots" and "Educational Reform vs. Revolution".
Taking time to reflect on your learning can enhance your understanding and retention of new information, as well as help you make connections to your broader goals and experiences. Standing firm on my learning philosophy, empowering a growth mindset, and taking choice, ownership, and voice over my learning experience while creating significant learning environments to implement in my innovation proposal has truly been rewarding. I have learned so much in these last 8 weeks and I continue to look forward to the new information I will acquire and how it can be implemented within my innovation plan and daily classroom culture.
